NGC 1980-D Lincoln cent struck on silver 2.4 gram planchet. It is a transitional off-metal on a silver 10c planchet in our opinion. An exciting coin being silver on a year that is over a decade removed from the last time the U.S. mint was striking silver dimes! The coin is silver and is slightly smaller than a normal cent, and weighs only 2.4 grams (a cent weighs 3.1 grams.) 

The coin is on a "Pre-1964" silver 10c planchet in our opinion, as there are marks on the planchet under the strike (accounting for the slightly lower weight than a normal 10c, which would normally have a weight of 2.5 grams), indicating the planchet may have been an old silver dime planchet that was found in a damaged condition on the press floor, or somewhere at the Mint, and was then struck in a cent press. 

An extremely rare error type, and very few cents struck on silver planchets are known after the year 1964. There are a few odd years known with one or maybe a couple silver cents known, but they are all very rare. 

There are (5) total 1980-D silver cents known. The population includes (1) MS65 (finest known); (2) MS64's; (2) MS62s. 

A rare opportunity to own a silver cent made over a decade after they stopped striking silver dimes. 

NGC MS64 lustrous with mostly white surfaces, and some brown areas of toning.
