PCGS 1898-S Morgan dollar uncentered broadstrike, with a large expansion in size. Effectively, the coin is a 5% off-center, with design missing on the obverse and reverse 6 o'clock.
Large broadstrikes (or 5% off-centers) like this on 1878-1904 Morgan dollars are scarce and desirable. Probably 2/3 of all Morgan dollar broadstrikes are dated 1921, so earlier dates are much tougher to find! Of those that exist, a number of them are impaired with counting machine marks, cleaning, or other damage, or are well worn from circulation--unlike this example.
The error occurred when a Morgan dollar planchet was struck while not restrained fully by the collar die, resulting in a broadstrike. Minor traces of collar marks can be see at two points on the edge, but it is largely out of collar, and has design missing.
A scarce opportunity to own a problem-free, major broadstruck Morgan dollar on a pre-1921 date!
