PCGS 1943-X steel cent late stage die cap strike, with the coin having much of the obverse design missing. There is a somewhat faint brockage of some of the words"CENT" and "UNITED STATES" on the obverse.
The error occurred when a die cap formed on the obverse die in a press, and then began striking brockages. Probably 5-10 coins into that run of strikes, this coin's planchet was fed into the press and struck by that die cap creating the late stage die cap strike.
Scarce but a number of them are known--they are popular (as are most steel cent errors.)
PCGS AU58 with gray surfaces and a decent amount of luster showing on the reverse. A few tiny spots, but nicer than the average example.
