PCGS 1884-CC Morgan dollar with a large 1/2 inch cracked planchet at 3 o'clock obverse (shows about 1/4 inch obverse) and about 1/2 inch on the reverse side. Cracked planchets occur when impurities in the metal cause a "crack" in the planchet. The brown line is from the impurities, and there's a visible, hairline separation in the crack area.
Cracked planchets are known on Morgan dollars, but are extremely rare on "CC" Mint Morgan dollars, with this being the only example known--unique! There is a 1884-CC with a completely broken in half planchet, which is the same error as this but with the planchet actually snapped in two pieces! This coin also being an 1884-CC makes it an interesting likelihood there was an issue with a batch of planchets in Carson City in 1884.
PCGS 1904 Morgan dollar laminated planchet obverse, with a major laminated planchet across the design from Ms.Liberty's neck to the back of the hat.
AU58 lustrous white.
