PCGS 1965 Lincoln cent transitional off-metal struck on a silver dime planchet. 1964 was the last year for striking 90% silver dimes, and in 1965, they switched to the new clad planchets. However, this 1965 Lincoln cent is a transitional off-metal, since it is struck on a silver dime planchet intended for use on 1964 and earlier dimes!

The coin weighs 2.51 grams, which is correct for a cent on a silver dime planchet. Also, the coin is slightly smaller than a normal cent, due to the smaller size of a dime planchet compared to a cent. Portions of the letters are missing near the rim, and the silver appearance of the coin make it an obvious error at a glance.

This is a very rare error type, with 1965 silver cents few and far between. This is, we believe, the 2nd 1965 silver cent we have ever handled (and the finest of the two.) There is an estimated 9 to 10 examples known of 1965 Lincoln cents struck on silver dime planchets. Often years pass before examples of this error come to market, making this a scarce opportunity to own one.

PCGS MS61 with light gold toning, and minor hairlines keep the coin grading higher. Moderate luster is seen across the obverse and reverse.
