NGC 1971-S proof Kennedy half die adjustment strike and struck thru on the obverse. On the obverse, the coin is struck through some sort of textured substance, similar to sandpaper. What it is, we do not know, but it is interesting and unusual.
Die adjustment strikes are very scarce on proof coins. They occur when the coining press strikes the coin with insufficient striking pressure, resulting in a poorly struck coin with missing design details.
NGC did not grade the coin, but we would grade it PR64 with brilliant white surfaces.
