PCGS 1986 1/4 ounce gold American eagle partial collar strike. The coin has a partial collar strike, with some of the edge design missing. The coin was struck while only partially resting within the collar die, causing only part of the edge to receive a reeded edge when it was struck.
Partial collar strikes (and all striking type of errors) are rare on gold American eagle coins. Very few are known on 1/4 ounce American eagles (probably less than 25 are known currently for the entire series from 1986-present.)
