PCGS 2000-P Sacagawea dollar transitional off-metal, struck on a Susan B. Anthony Dollar planchet. A dramatic and eye-catching coin, with the coin's nickel surfaces of the clad planchet contrasting with the expected bright "yellow" surfaces of a normal Sacagawea dollar!
It is a transitional off-metal because it is struck on the clad copper/nickel planchet intended for the SBA "small dollar" of the prior year, 1999, and in 2000, the "small dollar" coin's planchet was switched to the manganese alloy. This Sacagawea is on the prior year's different metal of planchet and so is a transitional off-metal.
SBA dollars were struck in 1999, while Sacagawea dollars (although dated 2000) were struck in 1999 and 2000. A SBA dollar planchet was probably left in a planchet bin, or press, which may be how this coin was struck. Sacagawea dollars and SBA dollars are the same weight and diameter, which makes it more possible for the planchets to be struck in the wrong press.
A very scarce coin, and there is an estimated 10-12 known of this error known for Sacagawea dollar on SBA planchet, and is both popular and desirable.
PCGS MS66 with blazing, lustrous surfaces and a beautiful example!
