PCGS 2000-P Massachusetts quarter obverse missing clad layer. The coin is copper on the obverse side due to the clad layer missing before strike.

The error occurs when the clad layer fails to adhere properly to the inner copper core during the planchet making process. When this happens, the outer copper/nickel layer falls away from the blank, leaving the copper core showing. When struck, the coin will be copper on one side, and also slightly underweight.
