Error Coin Market Update: June 2016
Posted by JonSullivan on Jun 16th 2016
With the stock market bumping up and down at all-time highs, gold and silver staying relatively steady, and overall the economy somewhat “mixed”, where is the error coin market right now? At this point in time, it is generally good for most error coins. Some error coins aren’t selling well, while others we have trouble stocking due to none being for sale on the market, or simply prices movin

1943 Steel Cent Strip--History
Posted by JonSullivan on May 26th 2016
Here is a interesting article on the 1943 steel cent strip, written by David Lange of NGC. The article gives some of the background of the 1943 steel cents, and then talks about how the pieces of steel cent strip came onto the coin market. We have handled many pieces over time, and all of it was rusty to some extent--this article will explain to you why that is. http://www.coinweek.com/deale

Double-Struck 1880 Morgan Dollar Counterfeits
Posted by JonSullivan on May 5th 2016
There have been a lot of Chinese counterfeits coming into the coin market over the last 5-10 years, and occasionally error coins have been the target. Recently, we came across this lot of double-struck Morgan dollars on eBay, with a "Buy It Now" price of $135. They were being sold as "copies" and not as genuine, but the problem comes from them not being marked in a permanent way as being cop

Vinyl 2X2 PVC Flips Will Damage Your Coins
Posted by JonSullivan on Apr 20th 2016
It is surprisingly how many people still use vinyl 2X2 coin flips to store their coins. Dealers and collectors alike are guilty of this, and the result are coins with a light hazy film of green PVC residue across the coin's surfaces, and sometimes even permanent damage to the coin. These PVC-coated coins have to be conserved in order to remove the damaging film of green. If you have any coins in s

Counterfeit Coins Struck on Nails on eBay
Posted by JonSullivan on Apr 18th 2016
Beware of the many fake coins struck on nails on eBay. They came out after a dime on a nail recently sold for over $40,000 at auction, and these counterfeiters are trying to rip off collectors with these fakes.
Genuine examples will always be certified by PCGS or NGC--none of the counterfeits will be. The coins are coming out of Asia, and are found on many different denominations of U.S

Error Coin Market Update December 2015
Posted by JonSullivan on Dec 8th 2015
The error coin market has been very active lately. Between eBay, major auctions, and business done with our clientele, it seems that the error coin market is generally very healthy, at least for us. There are of course some areas of weakness, and as a whole the error coin market has dropped off from some of the strength it was exhibiting several years ago, but overall we are happy with the a

Building an Error Collection Part#5: Collecting Errors by Type
Posted by JonSullivan on Oct 28th 2015
Collecting by Error Type
There are some collectors who like to collect error coins by “error type.” Most of the time, they are looking for examples of that error type on any and all series of coins, but sometimes they also want to collect an error type for a particular series of coin. This is an exciting and pleasurable way to collect errors since pretty much every coin is visually diff
