PCGS 1984-D Lincoln cent with a fully unplated planchet. The coin is missing the copper plating on the obverse and reverse.

Fully unplated cents are eye-catching and popular due to the obvious difference in the coins' color, being zinc instead of copper in appearance.

The error occurred when the planchets did not receive a copper plating. Normally, zinc planchets are immersed in a bath of copper plating, and receive their coating of copper. Sometimes they either miss this step or the plating does not plate the planchets, resulting in this error type.
