Error Coins in 2019
Posted by JonSullivan on Jan 8th 2019
2019 is here, and we have reasonably good expectations for the coin market this year. Although there is talk about softness in the coin market (and we agree there is), it is still a good market. Collectors are collecting, and dealers are dealing, and as long as prices are in line with the current market coins are selling well and buyers are not hard to find. Some prices are actually higher than th

NGC 2007-D Washington Quarter on Manganese Dollar Planchet
Posted by JonSullivan on Nov 1st 2018
We recently acquired a very interested 2007-D Washington quarter struck on a manganese dollar planchet, and struck in a dollar sized collar. Here is how we believe it happed, and also why we believe it is highly likely (although impossible to know for certain) that the coin was struck on a 2007-D Washington dollar planchet.
Although the NGC holder says “Sacagawea dollar planchet”, it ac

New Unique Experimental "Nonsense" Quarter Surfaces
Posted by JonSullivan on Oct 16th 2018
We recently acquired (and sold) a unique experimental nickel on copper coated zinc planchet, that was part of testing being done at the Mint in 2011-2012 era, which was reported in Coin World a month or so ago. From the same source, we acquired another unique experimental coin, which is a quarter "nonsense" design, which has also been waffle cancelled. One side depicts a rhino on t

2017 Mint Policy on Reserve Banks Handling of Mint Errors
Posted by JonSullivan on Sep 8th 2018
Here is an interesting article from Coin World, which states that the current Mint policy as of 2017 is that Federal Reserve Banks must return mint errors they find. Of course this doesn't apply to individual banks or collectors, etc. https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-coins/2018/09/fed-policy-requires-return-of-mint-errors.html

Martha Washington 5c Discovery
Posted by JonSullivan on Aug 17th 2018
We recently acquired a remarkable Martha Washington test coin, which although it was known to exist, none were privately owned until now. The example we purchased has been waffle cancelled at the Mint. Here is the article as written in Coin World by Paul Gilkes. https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-coins/2018/08/waffle-canceled-martha-washington-test-piece-surfaces.all.html

Baltimore Coin Show Report for March, 2018
Posted by JonSullivan on Mar 29th 2018
The Baltimore coin show held last week in Baltimore, MD, can best be described as "excellent." We did a lot of buying and selling, overall had a great show. Sales were stronger than we expected, and we sold a lot more than we expected to. Additionally, purchases were good, and we bought some rarities, as well as a pile of inexpensive errors. Many of the rare coins are off being graded, while

Type 1 & 2 Blanks and Planchets
Posted by JonSullivan on Mar 5th 2018
Here is an excellent article on the difference between type 1 and 2 blanks and planchets. It is a topic which causes a lot of confusion in the error hobby since people use the terms interchangeably. We try to stick with the definitions as laid out in this article put out by NGC, since we think they make the most sense. https://www.ngccoin.com/news/article/328/
