Coin Market Report March 19th, 2024

Posted by Jon Sullivan on Mar 19th 2024

This week we will be attending the Whitman coin show, held in Baltimore, Maryland. Last week we attended the ANA National Money Show, held this year in Colorado Springs, Colorado. If last week was any indication, the Baltimore show should be busy, as it was fairly non-stop at the ANA. Sales were more than expected, and there were a number of major as well as smaller sales to collectors. We probably sold as much as we bought, which is unusual as we usually attend shows primarily to purchase coins—there was not as much as we’d hoped for sale, although we did pick up some nice errors that will be offered in the coming weeks and months.

Various auctions have also been strong. One of the recent ones we participated in, resulted in a paltry few errors purchased—less than $1,700 worth, out of over $39,000 in what we thought were competitive bids—people were paying up! Prices were often double (sometimes triple) what we price identical coins for in our inventory. This isn’t to say that we’re “underpriced” necessarily, but the market is still strong. There is a demand for mint errors, and that’s a good thing. Collectors are seeking coins and building collections, and enjoying the hobby, as evidenced by their willingness to bid so competitively for errors they need.

We will be working hard to find quality mint errors at fair values for our customers, so keep an eye out in the coming weeks as we process coins from the show, and also it might be a good time to receive our inventory for coins, as we’ve listed a lot of fresh mint errors in the last month or so.

If you are attending the Baltimore show next week, we will be set up at “Sullivan Numismatics”, table #745, and will be there Thursday-Saturday (only until about 10 AM Saturday morning.) We look forward to seeing you at the show!
